Awesome Apps

Hey, hey, hey!  Have you got one of those new-fangled Apple iPhones?  Well, have we got something for you!

There are two new apps from Husqvarna Viking to make you and your hobby look cool:  “Color It” and “5D Thread Match”.

Color It  is free and comes with a selection of embroidery designs that you can look at, and then change the thread colour and preview the design.  There are hundreds of brands of thread, in all their colours, including metallics and variegated.  You can zoom in on the design and see it in the new thread colour you’ve chosen — especially neat with the multicoloured threads because you can actually see how it’ll stitch out in the design.  Drawback:  you cannot add other designs to the viewing collection.  Bonus feature:  it’s free.

5D Thread Match isn’t free, but it is cheap at just $2.99.  This is a much more flexible app, as you can photograph fabrics and match thread to the fabric, all on screen.  As well, you can use photos from your album and even zoom in to select the specific colour you’d like to match, be it hair colour or a shoelace.  Again, there are multiple thread families to choose from, and all their colours.  Click the image on the left to watch a video about how cool this app really is.  Drawback:  $2.99 cost.  Bonus feature:  can choose any colour from any photo.

The Quilt Store proudly carries several of the thread brands listed in the apps:  Jenny Haskins Rayon 40 and Metallic; Mettler Polysheen, Metallic, Silk-Finish, Metrosene, Neon, and variegated; Sulky Blendables; and our latest arrival is the Robison-Anton Rayon 40 line — the shiniest embroidery thread ever.

Both of these awesome apps are compatible with iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch (unfortunately, they’re not available for Android or other smartphones just yet).  We think they’re fun, helpful and will get the kids in your life into embroidery — even if it’s just on your phone.
